A Full-time Writer...

...for four months, at least.

I had some good news this week: MPOW granted my request for sabbatical leave, to allow me to pursue writing on a full-time basis. So, for four months beginning September 1, 2008, my (temporary) full-time job will be writer! Sabbatical leave isn't a benefit most employers offer, and I'm incredibly lucky MPOW does.

The goal of the sabbatical, as stated in my application, is to produce a book-length manuscript for a scifi/fantasy idea I'm developing. Obviously, four months isn't nearly long enough to crank out an entire book. I've a lot of research and planning and writing to do before my leave even begins. And I'm recruiting all of you to help me!

Hey, procrastination runs in our family, and I definitely inherited the gene. Since most fiction writers aren't fortunate enough to have a book deal that sets a deadline for a finished manuscript, we control our own schedules and set our own deadlines--which we're free to meet or blow off as we feel like. That lack of accountability is dangerous for a well-practiced procrastinator like me.

On January 30, 2008, the Write to Done blog published a post called "How to Hold Yourself Accountable as a Writer" that suggested the idea of a "virtual boss"--someone, perhaps even a blog audience, you answer to about your writing:
Blogs work great for this. If you tell your blog audience that you're going to post your writing one section at a time, every day, then you'll have pressure to actually write, or you’ll look bad in front of a large crowd of friends. No one wants that. Ask your blogging audience to hold you accountable. Of course, if you're looking to publish this writing elsewhere, you might not want to publish it on your blog, but instead you could just give them a word count or some other update like that each day--as long as you’re honest!
See where this is going, blog audience?

I'm going to set some goals and deadlines, and share them with you on this blog. I'll also report my progress, and (this is the important part) you'll call me on the carpet if I don't post when I'm supposed to or fail to meet one of my goals or deadlines. Fun, right?!

Now, I probably won't be saying much about the content of my writing. Writers are warned against talk about their ideas too much, because you risk depleting the creative energy of those ideas: Don't talk about your ideas; use them to write!

None of us have been very diligent about keeping up our blogs. I mean, there's a whole basement remodeling I never posted for you to see. But to be honest, my life usually isn't so extraordinary to tell you about. Using this blog to let you share in my writing process, and to keep my writing on track, seems a lot more fun and exciting anyway.

TIA for your help. I'll list you all in the acknowledgment of my first published book. :-)

Greetings from Poplar Tree Bay 2007!

Scott and I have been up here at the trailer since Friday afternoon. This photo is Scott's artistic inspiration: a silhouette of me against our first night's sunset. Weather on Friday was hot and gorgeous.

Scott's sister, Kathy, and her husband, Jim, arrived Saturday afternoon, and the four of us enjoyed drinks and dinner at Foxy's. And Scott and I managed to get in a round of golf this afternoon between rain showers.

This is just an interim post. More photos and details will follow once we're back in Chicago. Until then....

Putting Up with Me for 15 Years

Today Scott and I celebrate our 15th anniversary. Believe it or not, I'm not the easiest person to live with--but somehow Scott has managed for this long. And, if I'm lucky, he'll put up with me for a few more years still. :-)

That's all I'll say publicly here on the blog. I'll save the mushy stuff for home.

Tomorrow morning we make the year's first trip up to Poplar Tree Bay. The weather won't be nice enough to swim, but I'm sure we'll manage to squeeze in a round or two of golf.

Happy Birthday, Jenni!

Sorry the photo is over two years old. I only had one photo of you from Christmas at Gammaw Yowell's, and there were too many other people in it.

Thanks for the birthday card and especially the old photos of us. I wish I knew how old we were in that birthday photo. And did you notice in the photo of the three of us that Stacey and I have the same haircut? We don't have a scanner at home anymore--not since we bought a digital camera. Maybe I can talk Scott into scanning them at his office one day soon, so everyone can see how adorable we were.

I can't believe I'm 45...that's half way to 50! At least you'll turn 40 before I turn 50. Oh well, better 40-something than teens or 20-something again. (Justin and Lauren may scoff at that remark, but life gets so much better after 30.)

Scott and I are sending all kinds of birthday love your way, Jenni. Hope you had a special one!

Love,
Your OLDER brother, Steven

P.S.: Scott and I were in Vancouver, BC part of last week and took photos of that beautiful city to share with everyone. I hope to get them posted online later this week. And I need to post a basement remodeling update, too.

Another Christmas "Thank You"

I received an Amazon gift certificate from Jim, Scott's sister Kathy's husband, for Christmas, and thought I'd let him (and everyone else) know what I bought with it. You may not appreciate some of my purchases, but trust me--it's all good stuff.
Thanks, Jim! Let me know if you want to borrow any of the CDs.

Our Remodeled Upstairs Bathroom

As promised, I've uploaded photos of our (almost) finished upstairs bathroom to Flickr. The photo posted here is just a tease...you'll have to head over to Flickr to see all 19 photos! But even if you compare the finished photos with the before photos, you really will need to see our remodeled upstairs bathroom in person to truly appreciate it. Who's going to be the first to come see it?

Also as promised, there are photos of the demolition of our basement. We spent most of the day Saturday shopping for materials, and bought almost everything we can haul in either of our cars. BTW, thank you Mom and Dad! The Lowe's gift cards each of you gave us put a dent in the price tag. They helped us pay for hardwood flooring, can light fixtures, bi-fold doors, dimmer switches and electrical outlets, and a kitchen faucet for the basement.

Happy Birthday, Jake!

And So It Begins... Again

The remodeling of our basement started today. Yes, that means the upstairs bathroom is done! Well, almost done.

The upstairs bathroom is beautiful. I promise to post photos on Flickr this weekend to prove it. Unfortunately, there's a problem: water is seeping under the glass mosaic tile where it meets the top edge of the tub/shower surround, and this is causing a gray discoloration behind the bottom few rows of the tile in a couple of areas. Because the tiles are transparent glass this discoloration is very noticeable, but it also allowed us to discover the problem in time to insist the contractor fix it. So, as work begins in the basement the contractor is also trying to find a non-porous material to replace the existing concrete wall board behind those bottom rows of tile, to not only repair the existing damage but also prevent it from recurring.

When we first discovered the discoloration I was very disheartened and pretty upset. Here we were, finally, with a bathroom to be proud of, and already something is wrong with it. It felt like we somehow didn't deserve to have a beautiful bathroom in our house. We hadn't spent enough money or bought nice enough materials, so of course something would go wrong. But then you realize you just have to take a deep breath...and insist that the problem be fixed so you're getting the finished job you paid for. It helps our contractor wants to keep us happy, if only because we're spending a nice chunk 'o change with her.

Well, it's time for me to go to bed. In addition to the photos of the (almost) finished upstairs bathroom, I'll also post some of the basement demolition on Flickr.

Is This a New Year's Resolution?

Late in 2006 I sidestepped my natural inclination to procrastinate and started working on a writing project. Fiction, not theater-related (so I'm still not really using my college degree), but still an actual artistic endeavor.

Unfortunately, I seem to have the most success writing in the morning before work, which is when I'm supposed to be at the gym. However, even though I succeeded in motivating myself to start writing again, the writing is a demotivation (you can tell I'll be a good writer because I make up words) to working out. My pride in writing is undercut by my shame in having barely gone to the gym during the last few months.

So, in 2007 I need to figure out how to balance both writing and working out. Maybe it's okay for me to go to the gym only three mornings a week--Tuesday, Thursday and one weekend day--instead of the 4-5 I think I should be going. Then I would be free to write before work on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Writing three days a week is better than not writing at all, just as working out three days a week is better than not going to the gym at all.

But let's not call this a New Year's resolution. People have a tendency not to keep those.

Scott Has a Blog Now, Too

So, there's even more pressure for me to start keeping my own blog more up to date. I had planned to do some blogging this holiday weekend, but a head cold hit me hard late last week and had me in bed or on the couch most of the time. I finally started feeling better New Year's Eve night, although my nose is still plugged up and I'm blowing it often.

Merry Christmas, Family!

Scott and I wish you all our love and much happiness during this holiday season and every day of the year.

And I promise to get you all caught up with our upstairs bathroom remodeling. MPOW (that's a blog abbreviation for My Place Of Work) has kept me especially busy this past month, which left me feeling pretty lazy about blogging. The bathroom is almost done--I expect to be posting photos of the finished product within the next two weeks. (It would be sooner, but the contractor is only working Wednesday and Thursday of this coming week between Christmas and New Year's Day.) We can't wait for you to see it!

Love,
Steven

Hey Justin...

Happy Birthday!

Sorry, no photo of you to post with this birthday blog greeting. And, of course, your card will arrive late. Such is the curse of being a member of our family.

Love,
Uncle Steven

Things That Make You Go Hmmm...

A couple of exciting developments in the upstairs bathroom today (work day 13)...just not what we expected.

In the photo you see our new recessed mirrored medicine cabinet, and the new light fixture above it, in the...the...hey, where's the wall?!? I'm a little confused by the mounting of these items in a wall with no drywall. But I'm not a contractor. I'm not even a DIYer. So, who am I to doubt that this isn't the correct order in which to do the work. I keep telling myself to just take a deep breath and trust that the contractor and her crew know what they're doing.

Click the photo to view a few more on Flickr.

Update: Turns out Alvaro (the lead worker on our job) installed the medicine cabinet and light fixture just so we could see how they look. He'll take them down before the drywalling starts. See, my deep breath and trust strategy works!

Upstairs Bathroom Remodeling: Work Day 12

"Although still early in the process, we expect the pace of work to pick up and proceed rather quickly now."
That immortal line is taken from my previous blog post dated Monday, November 13. In the last week there's been very little visible progress, if only because much of the work being done was "behind the wall" stuff like replacing the water pipes all the way down to the basement and rewiring the bathroom so it's on its own two circuits in the breaker box.

Finally, late last week and today there's some 2x4 framing that's starting to give the bathroom some shape, but all of the walls are still bare studs. But the contractor tells me the work will be half way completed by the end of the day this Wednesday. Really? I'll be curious to see what qualifies as "half way." I'll post photos, of course. In the meantime, here's a gratuitously cute photo of Calvin and Abner.

We're not discouraged though. As a matter of fact, I'll be signing another contract with the contractor to redo our powder room and turn our basement into a livable TV room. That work will start as soon as the upstairs bathroom is finished. As much as we'd like to have our house all to ourselves again, we want all of the remodeling projects completed more.

The Whirlpool Tub!

Work day 7 and the new whirlpool tub is in position and the plumbing has begun. We finished up most of the shopping for the bathroom this past weekend, buying the tub, two different kinds of thin set and two different colors of unsanded grout (for two different types of tile), and a new floor register. We also scouted medicine cabinets, which we still need to buy. The only other items still on our shopping list are paint and switch plates.

Although still early in the process, we expect the pace of work to pick up and proceed rather quickly now. And despite the mess and stress the bathroom remodeling is causing, our contractor is meeting with us this Thursday evening to discuss two more job -- redoing the powder room on the first floor, and turning the front room of our basement into a TV room/home theater space.

Random Facts About My iTunes Library

(Or, is there such a thing as too much Kylie?)

The following facts and statistics were generated by a website called the iTunes Registry. You upload a file of your iTunes library and it analyzes it for you. So, presented here for my amusement and yours, are some random facts about my iTunes library...
  • Most Played Track: "Shocked" by Kylie Minogue

  • Most Played Album: Kylie Minogue's "Greatest Hits 87-97"

  • Most Played Artist: Kylie Minogue

  • Newest Track: "Smile" by Lily Allen (last week's free download from the iTunes Store)

  • Least Recently Played: "I Wouldn't Normally Do This Kind Of Thing" by Pet Shop Boys (does not include songs in my library that have never been played)

  • Average number of Albums per Artist: 1.84

  • Average number of Tracks per Artist: 9.46

  • Average number of Tracks per Album: 5.15
iTunes Registry is pretty cool -- but not perfect. For example, it says I have 6,196 tracks in my library, when iTunes itself says there are 6,287 items. And iTunes Registry says the longest track in my library is one called "More More More." I do have a song in my library called "More, More, More" by Bananarama, but it's only about 3 minutes long. And I have a song in my library called "I'm A Man" by Macho that's over 17 minutes long, which really is the longest, but somehow iTunes Registry missed it.

Bugs are to be expected since iTunes Registry is still in beta form. But even with the bugs I like this site and will continue to upload my library data to it.

Upstairs Bathroom Remodeling: Work Days 2 & 3

The demolition was pretty much done by the end of the second work day, which was yesterday. I've uploaded a new "day 2" photo set to Flickr so you can see the carnage.

New construction hasn't even started and already we're making changes to the original plan. Here it is only the third work day and we've decided that, because we have enough capacity in our breaker box to support a second circuit in the bathroom, we should install a whirlpool tub! Scott is very happy. And that's all that counts, isn't it?

It's so tempting to blog on about what we've got planned for the bathroom...but you're just going to have to wait to see it as it happens. Stay tuned!

Our Upstairs Bathroom Remodeling Begins

We're finally getting around to remodeling our upstairs bathroom. Or, to be more correct, we're finally getting around to PAYING someone to remodel our upstairs bathroom. We signed a contract with our contractor over two months ago, and the work finally started last Friday morning. We're documenting the process, beginning with some "before" and "day 1" photos on Flickr. (Sorry, but I wasn't very creative with the captions.)

Happy Birthday, Mom!

C'mon, you didn't think I'd let your birthday go by without a blog post...did you? :-)

That's Mom and me dining outside during our trip to Poplar Tree Bay in August. I think it was taken at Foxy's in Fischer's Landing. Scott is the photographer.

Love you and happy birthday!

Steven
